E-Learning Program on Energy Efficiency in Cities Course
September 26 2016

Developed by ESMAP, in collaboration with the World Bank Climate Change Group and Online Learning Center.

Cities play a critical role in economic growth, generating about 80% of global GDP. Housing more than half of the world’s population (estimated to grow to 70% by 2050), cities are also responsible for about 66% of global energy consumption and 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving sustainable development is not possible without addressing urban challenges. Urban energy efficiency can help green and inclusive growth, and generate economic, health, and environmental benefits. To meet knowledge demand for addressing urban challenges, the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), in collaboration with the World Bank Climate Group and the Online Learning Center, has developed an e-learning course on Energy Efficient Cities.

This self-paced course presents the concept of identifying energy efficiency potential and evaluating associated benefits, walks users through the different implementation models, including finance and procurement, defines key barriers and possible ways to address them and finally provides case studies to learn from experiences in specific municipal sectors.

The course has been designed to benefit city leaders, including mayors, but it also targets other practitioners in local, municipal, provincial, or national levels who make decisions on urban development. It can also be a valuable resource for professionals interested in urban energy efficiency. It consists of a series of courses on urban energy efficiency, covering diverse topics, bringing together 3 new modules on: (i) Energy Efficiency and Public Lighting; (ii) Energy Efficiency, Water and Wastewater; and (iii) Energy and Solid Waste Management; along with already developed courses on: (iv) Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings; (v) Saving Energy through Energy Savings Performance Contracts; (vi) Tool for Rapid Assessment of City Energy (TRACE*); and (vii) Integrated Urban Transport Planning on a single (new) platform to facilitate users’ access to the different modules.

The production of the e-learning course has also benefitted from financial support from the Korea Green Growth Trust Fund.
