GEOLAC 2026 comes to Mexico City on February 12, co‑hosted by the World Bank Group and ESMAP. Now in its 12th edition, the flagship regional forum will convene more than 250 policymakers, industry leaders, financiers, and technical experts to accelerate geothermal development across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Geothermal energy offers clean, local, and reliable power—available 24/7—for electricity generation and direct uses ranging from food processing to industrial heat. For developing countries, it is a powerful driver of energy security, climate resilience, and sustainable growth. Yet many countries with strong geothermal potential lack the regulatory frameworks, financing pathways, and technical capacity to move projects forward.
ESMAP is helping bridge that gap by supporting governments to strengthen geothermal policies and regulations, unlock private sector financing, build capacity across the geothermal value chain, and provide tailored technical assistance based on country needs. A recent example is Dominica, where a newly Board‑approved geothermal operation supported by ESMAP is expected to increase renewables in the electricity mix from 21 percent to 85 percent while strengthening grid resilience.
