On November 10-13, 2025, ESMAP jointly with the Digital & AI Vicepresidency, Quality Investment Partnership (QII), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Africa Data Centres Association (ADCA) organized a Powering Data Centers Workshop in Cape Town. The workshop convened more than 120 participants, including digital and energy government clients from Brazil, Cote d'Ivoire, DRC, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, SACREEE, SAPP, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Zambia, along with more than 40 data center investors and industry experts from the private sector. Presentations from energy and digital sector clients from Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Uzbekistan as well as break out discussions offered an environment for open knowledge sharing. The workshop demonstrated that data centers represent an opportunity to serve as a catalyst for modernization and decarbonization of power systems; they can anchor new privately funded renewable generation, contribute to needed grid upgrades, and support the financial sustainability of utilities through stable demand. To unlock these benefits, energy sector clients can leverage solutions including improved grid planning, regulations to unlock private generation, grid flexibility and energy efficiency measures, and cross government coordination.
