Clean cooking must be considered as a central part of energy planning, regulation, and investment decisions, especially when considering universal access plans in low-income areas.

Do you know cooking is the highest energy use for low-income groups? If we want to deliver energy access to low-income groups, we MUST consider a clean cooking solution.

To support clean cooking acceleration, the World Bank launched the Clean Cooking Fund in 2019 with a grant funding target of $500 million to catalyze $2 billion in public and private investments to help 200 million people gain access to clean cooking. The Clean Cooking Fund supported 27 countries and seven regions through grants and technical assistance and has developed a strong investment pipeline.

But we need to do more! In 2021 still 2.3 billion people were without access to clean cooking solutions (compared to 2.9 billion people by 2010). To reach the 2030 goal of universal access a significant acceleration is needed.

In the context of the urgent need to scale up investment to bring the 2030 goals within reach, the World Bank now proposes to start the second phase of the Clean Cooking Fund with a funding target of $390 million in grants from donors and climate finance institutions. During this second phase, the Clean Cooking Fund is expected to extend its direct reach, enabling access to clean cooking to more than 150 million people and leveraging more than 600 million in MDB finance. The avoided socio-economic cost of these interventions is estimated to be around $25 billion.

Watch this exciting knowledge-sharing opportunity where we showcased the role of clean cooking as a key part of energy access and energy transition.
