In collaboration with the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC), ESMAP hosted a workshop on geothermal development in Dar es Salaam on December 2 and 3. The workshop was held as a part of the preparation for ESMAP’s technical assistance to TGDC that will focus on preparing the company to undertake exploration drilling. The objective of the workshop was to share knowledge on the status of geothermal development in Tanzania among key stakeholders in the energy and extractive resource sectors and, more importantly, specific actions needed to prepare for the immediate next stages of exploration drilling.
During the first day of the workshop, the presentations brought practical international experience in geothermal development, particularly from Indonesia and Kenya, as well as best practices in resource data management from the Netherlands. The second day focused on TGDC’s training needs and training and capacity building options within Tanzania as well on a regional and international level.
Discussions were centered on the following topics:
- Phases of geothermal development, timelines, risks, and decision making
- Status of geothermal development in Tanzania and Indonesia
- Environmental and social safeguards in geothermal projects
- Planning of geothermal exploration drilling projects
- Value of oil, gas, and mineral exploration data for geothermal exploration
- Geothermal training and capacity building pathways and options for TGDC
Presenters came from TGDC, ESMAP, African Development Bank, PGE (Indonesia), TNO (Netherlands), ITB (Indonesia), UNEP-ARGEO, GDC (Kenya), UNU-GTP (Iceland), ICEIDA (Iceland), ÍSOR (Iceland), and BGR (Germany). In addition to the presenters, the workshop was attended by participants from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Southern and Eastern African Mineral Centre, Geological Survey of Tanzania, TANESCO, National Environmental Council, University of Dodoma, University of Dar es Salaam, JICA, and the High Commission of Canada.
