Accelerating Access to Modern Cooking: Launch of the State of Access Report | September 24, 2020
PRESENTATION | RECORDING | DOWNLOAD THE REPORTProgress towards ensuring access to modern cooking solutions, a key component to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), has been slow and disappointing. Today, 2.8 billion people globally still cook with traditional polluting fuels and technologies with severe impacts on health, gender, economic, environmental, and climate outcomes. A continued lack of access to modern cooking solutions not only jeopardizes the achievement of SDG 7, but also inhibits progress towards related SDGs.Solutions to tackle this pressing development challenge must prioritize user preferences and local cooking contexts to address longstanding barriers to the adoption of modern cooking solutions. The event launched the new State of Access to Modern Energy Cooking Services report developed by the World Bank’s ESMAP, in close collaboration with Loughborough University and the Clean Cooking Alliance, to provide an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of families’ cooking-energy needs to inform these critical solutions and recommend pathways to accelerate access to modern cooking.AGENDAModerator, Frank van der Vleuten, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands Welcome and Opening RemarksMari Pangestu, Managing Director, World BankSteven Rothberg, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Loughborough University Presentation: Key Findings from the State of Access to MECS ReportYabei Zhang, Lead, Clean Cooking Fund, World Bank CommentaryEd Brown, Research Director for Modern Energy Cooking Services Program, Loughborough University Panel DiscussionCharles Keter, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy of the Government of KenyaMaria Neira, Director of the Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Health Department, World Health Organization David Woolnough, Deputy Director Research (Tech & Innovation), UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO- UK)Sam Parker, CEO of Shell FoundationKul Man Ghising, Managing Director, Nepal Electricity Authority Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Special Rapporteur, Clean Cooking, Energy & HealthSheila Oparaocha, International Coordinator and Programme Manager, ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy Closing Remarks Dymphna van der Lans, CEO, Clean Cooking AllianceContact: esmap@worldbank.org
