ESMAP Webinar: The African Power Pools: Building Towards the African Single Electricity Market | March 11, 2026, 8:00 am (EST)

Join the World Bank Group’s ESMAP for a webinar co-organized with the African Union Commission on Africa’s regional power integration—and how to unlock the full potential of continental and regional electricity markets across the continent.

Regional power integration is one of the most effective levers to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity. By connecting power systems, countries can tap diverse renewable resources, improve system resilience, lower costs, and accelerate progress toward universal access—an objective that cannot be achieved in isolation, especially in Sub‑Saharan Africa where resources are abundant but unevenly distributed.

In this session, you will learn about the latest developments in the regional power pools, how the World Bank Group, has supported the development of African regional power pools and is scaling up engagement through regional programmatic projects such as RETRADE, and WA‑REMP. At the continental level, you will hear how the African Union’s African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) initiative is providing a shared vision to strengthen cross‑border electricity trade and advance strategic development goals, including Mission 300 and Agenda 2063.
