Energy Storage Partnership (ESP) Stakeholder Forum | June 7, 2022
AGENDA
By connecting stakeholders and sharing experiences in deploying energy storage, the Energy Storage Partnership (ESP) helps bring new technological and regulatory solutions to developing countries, as well as help develop new business models that leverage the full range of services that storage can provide.
ESP’s Approach
The ESP takes a holistic, technology-neutral approach by looking at all forms of energy storage, including but not limited to batteries. By developing and adapting new storage solutions to the needs of developing countries, the ESP will help expand the global market for energy storage, leading to technology improvements and accelerating cost reductions over time.
Objective of the event
On June 7, 2022, the ESP Stakeholder Forum convened the private sector, WB client country representatives, research institutions, and ESP Partners to share the experience of developing countries in their energy storage journey, and to present the latest on ground-breaking energy storage technologies. With over 700 participants in the last three years, the ESP Stakeholder Forum has offered a dynamic knowledge-sharing platform where all stakeholders can get updates on new and emerging energy storage technologies and their deployment throughout the world, and this 2022 June edition was equally exciting and informative.
Moreover, in the two days after the ESP Stakeholder Forum (June 8-9), the ESP secretariat moderated the 7th ESP Partners Meeting where the progress, work plans, and achievements of ESP working groups were exclusively discussed among partners.
Throughout past forums, ESP stakeholders and partners have deliberated on and assessed the progress being made towards achieving its objectives: building capacity and generating knowledge products to facilitate the scaling-up of sustainable energy storage investments in developing countries. For instance, the ESP is currently co-leading with GWNET the second cohort of Women in Energy Storage Mentoring Program, where over 350 candidates from more than 30 countries have applied to this program in both cohorts. In the past years, ESP’s work program has been focused on testing, training, and capacity building, producing three World Bank/ESMAP main publications, and the development of the Sizing Application tool. In addition, the ESP secretariat alongside India, Morocco, and South Africa have been advancing the implementation of the Global Network of Energy Storage Testbeds (NESTs) Initiative.
The ESMAP Practice Manager, Gabriela Elizondo Azuela gave her opening remarks on developments in Energy Storage globally and the importance of the ESP. Chandrasekar Govindarajalu, Lead Energy Specialist updated the participants on the Energy Storage Program and the progress on the Battery Storage Investment Program. Juliet Pumpuni, Senior Energy Specialist and Lead of the ESP provided updates on the ESP working groups and on a recent survey done to the partners. The secretariat announced the addition of two new partners since the last ESP meeting!
Presentations
The event included presentations delivered by World Bank clients on the implementation of energy storage projects in Gambia, India and South Africa. In addition, there were three presentations around groundbreaking energy storage innovations and their potential deployment in developing countries. First, Customized Energy Solutions (CES India) presented on using market intelligence and advanced proprietary modeling in India. And finally, as the ESP recognizes other alternatives and complementary storage technologies for Lithium-ion batteries, Gravitricity showcased its gravity-based energy storage technology and EnergiaSalv presented their Geotechnical Pumped Hydro Storage - Zero Terrain and their applications in WB client countries.
And don’t forget to participate in the Energy Storage Technology Webinar Series organized by the Energy Storage Partnership! The topics include thermal energy storage, long-duration electrochemical energy storage systems, and pumped hydro storage.
