Global Wind Atlas Gets An Upgrade
Regular users of the Global Wind Atlas may have noticed a substantial upgrade to the resolution, which went live in early July. This becomes apparent when you zoom in, as shown by the attached images from Ethiopia. The methodology behind the Global Wind Atlas involves using 9km mesoscale WRF modeling outputs provided by Vortex, which are put through the WAsP microscale model by experts at DTU Wind Energy. The new 250m resolution is based on the same mesoscale outputs, but the microscale modeling has been recomputed with a finer sampling interval to provide much greater granularity compared to the previous 1km output. This is particularly apparent in regions with complex terrain, as the images clearly show.
